build4good’s Alumni Network

About build4good’s Alumni Network

We believe matching students with nonprofits and mission-driven organizations can empower future leaders in technology with skills in human-centered design. Following the completion of the build4good internship program, build4good alumni are invited to join the alumni network. This network hosts speaker series events, career development workshops, skill building and leadership development workshops, and works on open source projects.

build4good’s Public Interest Open Source Initiative

build4good’s Public Interest Open Source Initiative is an alumni-led program that mobilizes university students and build4good alumni to contribute to civically focused, open-source projects throughout the academic year. Rooted in the values of collaboration, transparency, and community stewardship, the initiative connects emerging technologists with real-world challenges in public interest technology. Participants work in small, mentored teams to design, build, and improve open tools that advance social good—supporting efforts in areas such as criminal justice, civic engagement, and community resilience. By contributing to projects that serve grassroots groups and marginalized communities, students gain hands-on experience while delivering meaningful, real-world impact. Open source is central to this work. By building in the open, the initiative ensures that tools remain transparent, adaptable, and accessible to the communities they are intended to serve. Students contribute across the full technology stack—from frontend and backend development to user research, accessibility audits, data visualization, and documentation—while learning to prioritize inclusivity, usability, and ethical design. Beyond individual projects, the initiative fosters a broader ecosystem of collaboration across the civic tech and social impact sectors, strengthening the field of public interest technology and empowering the next generation of technologists to build a more equitable digital future.

build4good’s Contributions to Open Source Projects

Data Rescue Project:

In January 2025, New America joined the Data Rescue Project (DRP), an all-volunteer organization to help rescue at-risk federal data. Our build4good mentors and interns built an open data portal that centralizes datasets in a searchable, integrated hub. To date 1,230 datasets across 85 federal government offices compiled by over 500 volunteers have been rescued. Read more about the DRP here

Patrol Demographics Calculator:

Understanding the demographics of patrol districts is crucial for transparency, equitable policing, and community trust. This tool, built by build4good alumni in association with the Open Source Projects Initiative, aggregates open data to visualize who lives in each patrol area, helping researchers, journalists, and citizens identify potential disparities and advocate for fair representation.
